What is RagaFinder?
RagaFinder (RF) is a raga classification app for beginner carnatic music students. The app is based on a machine learning algorithm that is trained using many audio samples from YouTube and other sources. Using these samples, the model identifies ragams when user-generated audio samples are inputted. In future versions of the app, there will be a guided AI-based identification process (the app will ask users relevant questions to help them identify ragams themselves), as well as an extensive carnatic music database. Raga Classification
RagaFinder (RF) utilizes a well-trained convolutional neural network to identify ragams based on audio samples. In the beta version of the app, the model is trained on several well-known ragams (Shanmukhapriya, Karaharapriya, Mohanam, Kamboji, Kalyani, etc.) using around 15 samples (each 10-15 minutes long). The samples are diverse, containing both new and old renditions of ragams, as well as both male and female artists. The model is currently being trained with more samples to add on more ragams. We are looking into possibly crowdsourcing audio samples to train the model more quickly and efficiently.
Guided Raga Identification (not in beta version)
RagaFinder (RF) will contain a guided raga identification tool for carnatic music learners. It may not be too beneficial for a student to rely heavily on technology to help them identify ragams; they should be developing skills to do it themselves. This tool, however, combines the best of both worlds by allowing students to answer a series of analytical questions to come up an answer on their own, with just slight guidance by the AI. This should help students eventually master the art of identifying ragams.
Carnatic Music Database (not in beta version)
RF will create a holistic carnatic music database, containing accurate information about song lyrics, song meanings, composer histories, music theory, and popular carnatic music artists and concerts. It will be user-generated, allowing all RF users to add to the database. However, all information will be verified and inaccurate information will be removed from the app.
